Books read in 2006
| Eiger Dreams by Jon Krakauer
- Finished Dec.29/06
- Although the stories are quite dated (ie. lots of mention of pink spandex), the stories of being in the mountains are incredible. It makes me ache that the nearest mountain is two provinces away.
|
| The Motorcycle Diaries by Ernesto Che Guevara
- Finished Nov. 29/06
- Although an interesting travel diary, there is not much significant here. It is important only as a source of insight into Guevara's early life.
|
| Kiss of the Fur Queen by Tomson Highway
- Finished Oct.10/06
- Funny, poetic and striking. Very good.
- Recommended by Alicia E.
|
| Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond
- Finished Sep.9/06
- Suggested by Chris L.
- Wow, this book is packed so full of knowledge. Very interesting.
|
| The Zahir by Paulo Coelho
- Finished Aug.12/06
- This is an amazing book. Coelho is a master.
|
| Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
- Finished Jul.18/06
- Exciting and humbling.
- I came away with a much different idea of Everest.
|
| Angels & Demons by Dan Brown (Illustrated Edition)
- Finished Jul.7/06
- Great. Along the line of the Da Vinci code. Very interesting and captivating.
|
| The Book of Tells by Peter Collet
- Finished Jun.24/06
- Very interesting, I learned a lot.
|
| Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson
- Finished Jun.11/06
- Tiny book about dealing with change.
- Apparently a business classic. I thought I should read it to see why.
- It was definitely worth the time.
|
| The Pilgrimage by Paulo Coelho
- Finished Jun.08/06
- Great book. It makes you think a lot about how you live your life.
|
| The World Is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman
- Finished Jun.03/06
- Not really very good. Most was boring and trivial. I was waiting for the spark of genius insight that never came.
- The closing chapters about how the Muslim world and terrorism affect the flattening of the world were good and I guess made the book worth reading.
|
| The Darma Bums by Jack Kerouac
- Finished May.17/06
- Read this book during my west coast trip home from California.
|
| The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
- Finished May/06
- Lot of fun to read. I thought it was great.
|
| Feynman's Rainbow by Leonard Mlodinow
- Finished Mar.28/06 - Audio Book
- Very short. I liked it.
|
| Frozen In Time by Owen Beattie and John Geiger
- Finished Mar.25/06
- I am fascinated by the arctic and this book about investigating the Franklin expedition was wonderful.
|
| In the Path of an Avalanche by Vivien Bowers
- Finished Feb. 20/06
- True story recounting an avalanche in BC which killed six backcountry skiers.
- The book described in great technical detail the science of avalanches. I appreciated reading this as much as the story.
- It was a good read - well written and researched.
|
| The Best Software Writing I by Joel Spolsky
- Finished Feb. 14/06
- A collection of articles about software picked by Spolsky.
- The articles were all entertaining and informative.
- A great read that shows you software can be an interesting topic to write about.
|
| The Valkyries by Paulo Coelho
- Finished Feb. 5/06
- A very different book. I'm not sure what to think.
- It did have some very personal moments between the narrator(author?) and his wife that struck a cord with me.
